Judge orders quick removal of primates from Silver Spring lab

In Rockville, Sixth Judicial Circuit Judge David L Cahoon ordered 16 primates from Edward Taub’s Behavioral Biological Center to be temporarily housed in one of four commercial labs. The move follows the death of a monkey named Charlie after a prior attack on him by Nero during cage cleaning. Charlie died of cardiac arrest after surgery by vet J A Stankard. Remains to stay at the lab while relocation proceeds. NIH earlier rescinded a $115000 grant and demanded a detailed report on expenditures by Nov 16. Taub faces trial in Shady Grove District Court on Oct 27 amid charges about facility conditions and sanitation.
