Typhoon Season Handicapping U S Pacific Fleet Actions
Pearl Harbor Oct 94 Adm Chester W Nimitz says typhoon season hampers American operations in the Pacific notably at Palau but Pacific Fleet remains at Gen Douglas MacArthurs disposal for attacks on the Philippines He stresses the need to land on the China coast to secure a base near Japan and extend power westward toward the Chinese coast as Formosa remains Japanese held. China coast cities like Foochow loom as potential pressure points while the China situation grows serious jeopardizing Allied air support. The Japanese improving their China setup would raise our task but bases in China will be secured when possible. Also notes an Oak Leaf cluster award to Lt George F Combs for Air Medal merits during bombing campaigns in France.

Two Frederick men are named in war casualty reports from Italy. Sgt. Richard W. Huntzberry, recently honored with the Bronze Star, was killed in action on September 22. Pfc. Paul King, son of Edward King, is reported missing in action and becomes Frederick’s first locally listed colored casualty. He was born near Williamsport and entered service in January 1933, with service across Africa, Sicily, and Italy. His last letter, dated September 20, says he was well and things were going smoothly. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clamence Muiteneits of 8 Waters Street, a brother Ronney, and three sisters Sliss Edna Huntzberry and Tillie Huntzberry at home and Mrs. Swifts, employed in Fort Meade. King, reported missing in Italy, is the son of Edward King of 110 East Street. His father indicated the last letter arrived about six weeks ago.
