Planning panel backs cold season shelter site plan
The Frederick Planning Commission unanimously approved renovations for a warehouse at 27 DeGrange St including a large addition a covered handicap ramp and parking as the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs moves toward a permanent cold weather shelter. The shelter slated to open November 2002 will operate this year from McHenry Auto Parts. Opponents fear congestion and safety concerns but advocates argue the site is best among eight options and will remove homeless individuals from the streets. A waiver from the Board of Aldermen is needed for sidewalk location and road proximity.
