WISE helps impaired women in spinal injury support
Sharon Schaumburg survived a suicide attempt due to chronic spinal arthritis and found recovery through WISE, a Maryland Virginia DC network founded by Mary Lou Bernard. The group offers social contact and information via telephone and a monthly newsletter for about 103 women, many unable to travel. Delores Greene, another member, describes early miscommunication in care and the group as a vital support system for adapting to life after spinal injury.

Disabled at Fair as Handicapped Parking Fails Area
Brenda Dinkle, a 31 year old wheelchair user, faced full handicapped spots and mud filled lots at The Great Frederick Fair. A security rep allowed a restricted area parking but attendants warned of towing. Mary Lou Bernard and WISE members faced similar issues across the street. Peggy Martin of Western Maryland Coalition cites misuse of spots, not lack of spaces, as the core problem.
