Flood control project eyed to protect downtown Frederick
The city outlines a multi phase flood control plan begun in 1974 to channelize a 120 foot wide stream from West Patrick to Carroll streets. Phase I funds $653,463 for an environmental impact draft. Phase II $2,728,240 covers property acquisition and bridge work. Phase III and IV sum to $1,676,000 and $2,223,000 with Phase IV slated for 1987. Some buildings may be removed though historic ones could be rebuilt elsewhere. The Tivoli Theatre organ survived with minor damage while the center underwent extensive cleanup and repairs aided by volunteers.

Frederick flood memory lingers five years on
In Frederick in 1961, many downtown businesses and homes never fully recovered from the flood. Owners recount losses, with James Office Supply near Court Street destroyed and rebuilt after five hours on a roof. McClellan’s veterinary clinic lost equipment but saved vital records. Delphey’s Sporting Goods recalls rising water to the second floor and rescue boats. Red Cross offices faced ceiling-high waters yet operated with temporary HQ on East Church Street, while donor files and records were lost or damaged.

Holt declines senate bid to seek reelection to House
Maryland congresswoman Marjorie Holt, a longtime Fourth District Republican, announced she will not challenge Sen. Paul Sarbanes next year. She cited personal and family considerations plus work on the House Armed Forces Committee as factors in staying in the House. Holt said she would support the Republican primary winner and hinted preference for alternatives to Laurence Hogan, while noting strong poll numbers and the ability to raise funds for a potential Senate race in the future. The decision comes amid pressure from GOP leaders and questions about party unity for a Sarbanes challenge.
