30000 Trees To Be Planted In Frederick County Fall

Cooperators with the Frederick and Catoctin Soil Conservation Districts plan to plant about 30000 trees this Fall toward a 100000 tree goal. District work unit conservationist Rhea T. Kincaid, with USDA Soil Conservation Service technicians, also expects about 125000 shrubs and bushes for wildlife borders to be planted before year end. Kincaid cited land surveys showing 20 percent of county farmland best suited to trees or permanent cover and noted erosion and gullied land drive the need for tree planting to rebuild soil and provide shade, wildlife cover, and wood. The districts, established under state law, are administered by boards of local farmers who oversee conservation technicians.
