United Brethren Church Origin in Frederick County
The United Brethren Church began in Frederick County with a 1800 gathering at Peter Kemp’s farm near Frederick, marking the denomination’s birth. Earlier ministerial meetings by Otterbein, Boehm and others traveled through Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, often in barns, as churches were scarce. The 1800 conference at Kemp’s barn led to the first U B Church US conference, with about 125,000 followers at the time. The church now has about 2,000 members in 14 congregations in the county, including Overbein Memorial Church established 1900 04 and valued at $25,000 after renovations. Continuous service history lists several pastors and landmark sites connected to the early movement.
