Truman order on security info sparks White House debate
James Marlow reports on President Truman’s Sept. 25 directive creating uniform standards for classifying security information across agencies. While Defense and State are primary, others like Agriculture and Commerce issued their own secrecy systems. Editors contain dissent, warning of peacetime censorship and vague labels concealing non security facts. White House clarifications say publish information from qualified officials only, causing public confusion.
