Day of Atonement Begins On Tuesday
The Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur begins at sundown Tuesday October 12 and ends at sundown Wednesday October 13. It is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar observed in Temples and synagogues with fasting, prayer and atonement rituals. The fast seeks forgiveness and the redemption of souls as the Recording Angel records each person for the year ahead. It urges restitution and sincerity to live in peace and justice for all mankind. The service closes with the ram’s horn, the shofar, calling for return to faith and brotherhood. Also notes: The Truth Seekers Class at Calvary Methodist held its first fall meeting September 20 at Mrs. John Wickless’s home, with Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer recited, and plans for future meetings and social hours.

Defended by Austin James Valentine, the drunken driving charge saw testimony questioning sobriety and car familiarity, but the magistrate’s order emphasized unbiased witnesses and the possibility of intoxication.
