Gold price rise and US steps to protect gold reserves
Gold on the London market edged higher after a period of levelling as the United States broadens measures to deter foreign draining of American gold reserves. In August the Exchange Stabilization Fund added 28 million dollars to holdings while Treasury reserves held steady. In September London prices rose 30 cents an ounce and this week reached 35 dollars 11 25 per ounce with the official US Treasury price at 35 dollars. Foreign central banks may buy US gold, and past pressures in 1960 showed reserves can fall when prices climb.
