Bank Robbery and Hallowell Murder Verdicts Hit Maryland Court
Elliot county men Mitchell and Adams were convicted of murder in the first degree for the Sandy Spring bank robbery and the killing of Director Francis M. Hallowell. The court sentenced Adams to life imprisonment while Mitchell’s fate drew appeals and a split decision among the judges. Penderghast was acquitted, while defense and prosecutorial arguments detailed identifications by bank officers and witnesses.
