Pope McClure lauded after tense surrender in Atlanta

Detective Frank McClure, 32, talked a gunman into surrender after a five hour standoff at an Atlanta hotel. McClure received applause as he led the man back inside, saying he remained focused on his sworn duty. Police later charged the gunman, Joseph Thomas Williams, 21, of Buffalo, with armed robbery and kidnapping. A preliminary hearing was set for Monday.

Nevada Death Row inmate Bishop grows silent before gas chamber trip

Nevada Death Row inmate Jesse Bishop, 46, has stopped talking to reporters as his Oct. 22 execution date nears after a judge had not set Oct. 29. Officials say he calmed after an initial outburst and a family spokesman notes he has decided to halt interviews as the date looms. Bishop was sentenced to death for the December 1977 Las Vegas casino robbery slaying of David Ballard.

Anti nuclear protesters assault Seabrook plant with improvised rafts

More than 1,200 demonstrators used truck inner tubes and makeshift rafts to breach a Seabrook New Hampshire marsh area and approach the nuclear power plant. State police in riot gear met the crowd at the fence as several protesters cut through, aided by dogs and warnings.

Frederick City police group seeks aldermen recognition
