Fifth guilty plea in GSA case in Washington

BALTIMORE AP A GSA store manager Wilmont Peters 49 of Alexandria Virginia pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the federal government in a multicity probe. Peters faced US District Judge Alexander Harvey with prosecutors seeking a sentence of one year and one day. He was among 18 indicted in the investigation of the government’s chief landlord and a supplier. Sources estimate the total loss could reach 94 million. Indictments were among first in the GSA case and more prosecutions were expected within six weeks.

Paper cleared in libel suit on Eastern Shore Times

A jury ruled the Eastern Shore Times did not libel Elizabeth Sanford, wife of Worcester County State's Attorney. Newspaper editor William Gilbert Williams and reporter Robert F. Buchanan faced libel charges over two November and December 1877 articles alleging Sanford intervened in a prosecution of her gardener.
