New Tax Bill Looms As Present One Expires
Washington October 5 A new tax bill to raise federal income to about 30 billion dollars yearly will be asked of Congress as it enacts the pending revenue measure Treasury Secretary Morgenthau said today He warned the bill might bring in at least six billion and possibly much more while a minimum 30 billion is needed to run the war The Senate Finance Committee reported estimates show lower yields leading to debate over a six billion cap Some lawmakers fear higher income taxes and hint at a sales tax as a possible alternative Officials noted quick action may be unlikely before Congress ends in January and hearings could be delayed by debate over tax structure
