Trial of Professor Briggs Draws Turbulent Crowd
A thousand people gathered at the Wash church as Professor Charles A. Briggs faced a presbytery trial to determine charges that he teaches Bible not the sole divine truth and denies immediate sanctification after death. Debates over postponing the presentation of charges sparked heated exchanges before a roll call defeated a motion to delay. Briggs will respond within ten days. In New Jersey the Colored Knights of Pythias met in Borpextons with delegates from around the state, while news from Hyde Park reported Mrs. James Connor left 4000 in fortune unhidden until after her death.
