In Green Bay Lake Michigan a squall capsized the J. H. Hackley causing 11 deaths. The Goodrich steamer Shebogan rescued seven survivors who drifted all night, while the Hackley’s upper works were blown away before sinking. Police bayonets quell the melee as the crowd disperses.
John Phillips a 55 year old Niagara Falls saloon keeper from Leicestershire tried to leap into the falls. He waded into the rapids with water above his knees and fell, swept toward the brink. A man named Arnold reached him on a log and formed a living chain to pull Phillips ashore.
Rev Father Caesar Spicardi, a St Louis priest, is named a monsignor and chamberlain of honor in the papal roster. He says Pope Leo XIII conferred the honor about three years before his arrival in America and he kept it private to continue his parish work.
