EPA data reveal most of 800-plus cars, trucks and vans averaged around 20 mpg city and under 25 mpg highway. Luxury models like Ferrari 500 Maranello and Lamborghini Diablo posted very low figures, while hybrids remained rare. Cars from VW Passat to Jetta showed wide gaps within classes, and fuel economy gains lagged behind consumer demand for larger vehicles.
