Soviet Education Change Alarms U S Official Says
Dr Floyd Ash of the U S Office of Education described a sweeping shift in Soviet schooling. He reported that technical schools with factory practice are expanding, liberal arts remain, and rural areas still use older systems, with a ten year plan to standardize by 1960. He noted elementary classes average 30 students, coed classrooms, and strong state control over discipline. The conference audience of 600 teachers discussed implications for the U S free system and urged evaluation reports for a permanent record.
