The Frederick News notes regional population could hit 460000 by 1960, up 12.2 percent in five years. Growth factors include stabilized Washington employment, slower federal expansion, and birth rates near current levels. Ray Mackley was judged best male cake baker in Brigadoon, a village celebrating its first anniversary formerly known as Saratoga Village. Fred Thaeter and Howard Tyervar placed second and third. Leesburg Va Oct 3 an elderly farmer was shot to death yesterday and a long time tenant and friend, Frank Fields 70 Round Hill, was charged with murder. The Loudoun County sheriff said Fields killed the farmer in the yard of a rented house after an argument between the two men.
A Baltimore reformatory inmate who escaped aboard a garbage truck was recaptured last night about twelve hours after his flight. Police identified the incident near Brethesville with officials from the reformatory confirming the capture and return to custody late Saturday.
Calvin Lee a 16 year old Negro, sentenced to 10 years for burglary, was found about a mile from the Reformatory for Males. He had been at the reform school since February last year after multiple absences and a jailbreak attempt including digging through a courthouse lockup wall. A San Francisco publisher George Cameron, 82, dies.
