Pfc Sweeney 19 son of Frederick residents seriously wounded in Belgium first local casualty reported. Lieut William Kreh also wounded in Belgium while Carty in New Guinea reported wounded. Details include APO numbers and ongoing hospital care, with families awaiting further word from War Department.
London radio quoted an Algiers broadcast stating that half of the German occupation forces on Crete had been killed wounded or captured by Allied troops. Allied landings on Crete were reported yesterday by the Morocco radio, but no official confirmation had been issued.
German Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels said Allies have mounted an all out offensive against Germany and that the Nazis are ready to wage guerrilla warfare to the death.
President Roosevelt telegrams James Petrillo head of the American Federation of Musicians urging the ban on musical recordings be lifted. He says wartime emergency is not caused by the union and that government should not force a return to record making but the ban should end for orderly government. The War Labor Board has directives to withdraw the ban but Petrillo has not complied. AFM says Petrillo is out of town and unavailable for comment.
Reuters fronts a 4 am start for a 48 hour truce in Dunkerque the besieged German held port evacuation of civilians from the city is to be allowed the Allied 21st Army Group confirms the halt in fighting amid German claims of a settlement with Canadian forces.
A cocktail party hosted by an advertising club turned chaotic when a map announced a giveaway of 24 nylon items. Twenty-four nylon boxes were tossed to 104 women and 200 men as contestants scrambled for prizes, ending with toothbrushes instead of nylons.

Alfred E. Survived by three sons, two daughters, a sister, and fourteen grandchildren.

S. Sgt. Angleberger son of Mu and Mrs Sfarry E. Angleberger of 7 Hamilton Avenue arrived in Frederick on a 21 day furlough after about four months as a combat gunner on a B-24 in the European theater. He was reported missing July 9 over Yugoslavia but later said to be safely back at his base in Italy. He was wounded before baling out when his plane was shot down. After furlough he will report to Atlantic City for assignment.
Tech. Sgt. Harry O. Gosnell, veteran of action with the 13th Army Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific, returns to the United States on furlough to visit his mother Mrs. Ethel Sherald in Baltimore and a wounded comrade in a New York hospital. Gosnell holds the Purple Heart, the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters.
President Roosevelt will meet top military commanders this afternoon. On the call list are General George C Marshall Chief of Staff Admiral Ernest J King Chief of Naval Operations General Arnold commander of the Air Forces and Admiral William D Leahy the President's own Chief of Staff.
Detroit October 4 900 maintenance workers at Briggs Manufacturing suspend production of air craft and truck parts after leaving their jobs. More than 2001 workers were sent home as the strike by Maintenance Construction and Powerhouse Workers Council of the UAW CTO was deferred pending War Labor Board talks on wage dispute procedures.

Annapolis Ont 4 cA petition for a writ to rescind the vote on a referendum measure to revise the state constitution. Noah A Ullman county attorney filed the petition charging the referendum is unconstitutional and would amend three constitution sections with a new one, despite legislative approval after a fierce Senate fight. Wolfe has notified friends that he is recovering in an English hospital from wounds to his face and both legs suffered in France on July 70. He is a member of Company B, 15th Infantry, from Hagerstown, in service about four years, stationed in England for two years before the invasion, and he entered France with the 29th Division. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Walter A Wolfe near Smathsburg and wife Alzss La Rue Rowe, with their six year old daughter residing at the parents’ home in Myersville. Sixt Wolfe received the Purple Heart and was forwarded to his wife.
