Fire in Coal Mine Traps Four Penned in Shaft
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania on October 4 a fire destroyed the Fast Boston breaker of the W G Payne Coal company at Luzerne borough blocking the main shaft of the Tour pumy. Four pumpmen were trapped and later escaped via an air shaft as rescuers fought the blaze at the bottom to prevent spread. Twelve hundred men were discharged from work.
