In Philadelphia on October 4 the United Irish League of America pledged to raise 100000 for Ireland home rule within two years. A 50000 subscription was urged, and within minutes 70000 was raised, later rising to 78000. Delegates from multiple cities pledged large amounts, with Philadelphia contributing 10000 and other cities adding to the total.
Armed robbers struck the Japanese bank Kimmon Ginko on O Farrill street at 1588. They killed the paying teller and fatally beat another clerk, escaping with $8000 in gold. One attacker threatened with a gas pipe while the second grabbed a sack containing $5000 and both men fled as police sought them citywide. The two clerks died or were grievously harmed and the robbers remain at large.

Company officials found no unusual conditions and offered no clear cause. No explosion or furnace damage occurred.
Steamboat officers, amid wage disputes with Baltimore Chesapeake and Atlantic and the Maryland Delaware and Virginia Railway, press a wage claim as three days of drydock stoppages end tied up piers. Crowded wharves force temporary reallocations to handle heavy fertilizer and perishable freight including tomatoes risking rot on the piers.

Doctors at Presbyterian hospital fear she may not survive as skin grafting surgery is not yet possible. Friends offer skin to aid possible grafts though prognosis remains grave.
