Understanding Car Odors and Brake System Clues
A science-based guide explains common car smells. Burnt rubber indicates heavy brake use in the ahead vehicle, or overheated brakes in yours. Engine braking or shifting to lower gears helps. Gasoline odors point to fuel system leaks, vacuum tank overfill, or exhaust connections. Leaking carburetors or crankcase vents may also emit fumes, especially with wind flow. Seek brake service if brakes show wear or odor persists.
