Washington AP report shows President Bush weighing television appeal to rally public support for a $500 billion deficit cutting package. Leaders seek votes amid fierce opposition from Republicans over $134 billion in new taxes and $182 billion in defense cuts.
A 14 or 15 year old youth is held without bail on first degree murder and assault charges after a Saturday morning shooting on West Seventh Street Frederick. Police seek witnesses as investigations continue into the deaths of James Edward Dennis Jr. and an attack on Nabel Latief Iskander. The weapon remains unrecovered.
Brunswick embattled Mayor Susan V. Fauntleroy announces candidacy in the recall election set for October 30 after the town council accepted VOCAL's petition. She defends her record and says she will campaign while fulfilling mayoral duties.
Frederick County Board of Education released final 1990-91 enrollment figures showing 26,875 students, a 2.7 percent rise. Elementary and middle enrollments rose while high school numbers declined, prompting calls for a four year upgrade program and a new southeast high school planned to open in fall 1995.
Frederick city and its police department will form a four member committee to discuss overtime pay changes under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The suit, filed by eight officers in U S District Court, seeks back pay dating to December 1986 for overtime duties including care of police dogs. If no agreement is reached by January 1 the case will proceed. Officials hope to settle and address manpower shortages and morale.
Middletown High School junior James Nicholas Staus, 17, died after his car overturned on Bible Road west of Middletown. Passenger Danell Rae Silliman, 16, sustained minor injuries. Principal David Keech described Staus as personable and well known, with extra counseling at the school.
U S military sources say forces in southern Iraq and Kuwait have been reinforced with nearly half of the 1 million man army to defend occupied territories. The USS Independence entered the Persian Gulf on a show of force, with its carrier group passing the Strait of Hormuz and remaining for routine operations. Egyptian troops also head toward Saudi Arabia as Iraq delays its UN General Assembly speech, stirring speculation.
