Franco pushes for base expansion amid Spain’s 25 year rule
Franco urged integration of the 1933 aid-for-bases pact with the United States and pressed for another major U S air base in Spain as he marked 25 years in power. The speech to Cabinet and military leaders followed his private meeting with officials and was broadcast nationally. The 1953 pact already commits the U S to three large air bases and a naval installation in Spain.
