Students Illustrate Calendar for Portland Symphony Project
Seventeen Sam Barlow High School students in Gresham Oregon contributed black and white drawings for the 198 Portland Symphony calendar. Under art teacher Polly Hobbs the project boosted students' self esteem by showing marketable skills and offering VIP attendance at a symphony performance. Students designed month titles and included instruments, with August showing a baritone and animal scene and October featuring a clarinet as a witch hat. The cover features a photo montage of students at work with conductor James DePreist.

Fair features furniture at Frederics Fair and creates skilled pieces
The Frederics Fair showcased traditional crafts with a category for men’s work in carpentry and woodworking. Notable entries included game boards, cabinetry, a deacon’s bench, a cradle by Steve Tourmont and William Byler, and a walnut cradle by Purcell. One prize cradle involved seven months of work, while others highlight reproductions and period-inspired designs. Many artisans discussed their methods and preferences, including hand refinishing and avoiding vats.
