Rain disrupted the Frederick Fair on Governor's Day with afternoon races and attractions halted by about 12 30 pm though officials hoped the 8 pm show could proceed. Tuesday receipts topped last year as premium contests highlighted Farm and Garden displays and 4 H exhibits amid strong produce quality and large pumpkins.
Pittsburgh during a major hotel strike cripples five properties and disrupts operations across the city as workers walk out seeking contract gains. The action marks the first large scale hotel labor dispute since 1946.
Officer Alton C Twenty, 33, was struck by a car at Fairview avenue and Seventh street while directing school patrol. He suffered fractured ribs, possible leg fracture, bruises, and shock but serious injury not expected. Dr John H Messler, 72, of Johnsville, claimed pedal error caused the collision and face charges of reckless driving.

Formosa AP Two more Nationalist supply convoys have reached Quemoy despite the heaviest Communist bombardment for over a week. The Defense Ministry said ships and aircraft delivered supplies by sea on Monday and Tuesday and parachute drops occurred on both days. The ministry did not disclose cargo amounts or the number of vessels and planes involved.
