Fair weather held firm as the annual fair opened for five days with cool conditions and a revised forecast for pleasant weather through Thursday. Exhibits filled the grounds with strong poultry and waterfowl entries. judges reported high quantity and quality, while crowds were light on opening day except around livestock judging and grandstand attractions.
Thieves hit Arcticare plant South Wisner street McCutcheon Apple Products and Ramsburg Fertilizer in Monday night raids. About 70 cents from a vending machine and pennies from a cash drawer were taken. Entry gained via window or broken lock. no major losses reported. Det. Sergt. A Norman Dietz leads the investigation.
October schedule set for arraignments and trials in Circuit Court. Sterling Rice and Carl Kier face murder charges with trials and related indictments planned for October 8 through October 16. Remaining at large were Kenneth Myers 21 and Ernest Bodmer 18 Poolesville.
State Police set up a roadblock west of the city to locate six inmates believed hitchhiking. Baker, Myers, Adams, Bodmer and others were serving terms for larceny, assault, and housebreaking with parole recommended. Roadblock team included Capt. Charles W. Magabz and other troopers.
A 16 year old student David Ozersky left St Clare’s Hospital after being blinded partially by lye during a Jefferson High School incident on Sept. 19. Prosecutor Maurice Kessler, 15, a classmate, faces assault charges as Ozersky recovers and says he hopes for improvement.

The 21 mile resurfacing from Huyett's Crossroads toward Frederick uses welded wire fabric over deteriorated concrete base to reduce cracking. Project aims for mid November completion with continuous traffic and 4300 boreings plus 96 000 gallons of asphalt.

Twenty four others injured including driver Meldon Smith 33. Witnesses cited brake failure as bus failed to stop before the plunge.
