Man hanged after tear gas thwarted jail escape attempt
Tony Vettere, convicted murderer, was executed at the Butte county jail after an assault on officers who tried to escort him to the scaffold. He seized an iron pipe and a spoon knife, was sprayed with tear gas for 15 minutes, revived, and died six minutes after the trap was sprung. Vettere maintained his innocence in the Antone Favere shooting.

Robbery Bandits Kill One in Quarrel Over Loot
Baltimore October 1 AP Three bandits robbed the Henry Sonneborn Company paymaster at Wratt and Paca streets of 47500 and fled in an auto with Ohio plates 966-210. A dead bandit was found later in Fremont and George streets with a head wound. Police suspect a quarrel over loot led to the killing. No money recovered from the car. The other robbers escaped. A Chicago label on the hat and a laundry mark on the dead man aided identification efforts. The car door clipping caused the vehicle to pull away hurriedly through Paca Street traffic.
