Stew Alcorn roars as Urbana High School clinches the Class 2A state title against Fort Hill at Byrd Stadium College Park Saturday night. Players join hands at midfield and pray after the victory as fans erupt.
Frederick County hunters filled stations across the county on opening day of the 198 firearm season, with nearly 1,400 deer checked at five stations including Mountaingate Exxon and Sunset Supply. About 75 vehicles crowded U.S. 15 near Thurmont, and officials noted Maryland's deer herd remains large relative to available forage, prompting planned specials hunts to reduce numbers.
On the 61st day of hunting season two hunters were shot in accidents and a third was injured in Boonsboro and Hamsville areas Saturday. Lonnie Hughes, 40, was wounded in the hand when his muzzleloader discharged while in a tree stand behind his Moser Road home. He was taken to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore in stable condition. A second hunter suffered a gunshot to the right shoulder on Ball Road in Hamsville. The report notes the incidents occurred about 6 p.m. and 6:23 a.m. respectively.
Johnsville Unit Methodist Church members rose before dawn to cook a hunter’s breakfast on deer season opening day. About 15 volunteers served pancakes, eggs, sausages, pud in and drinks to early patrons, with proceeds aiding church coffers and community needs.
Cigarette prices jumped after a tobacco industry settlement with states, with Frederick retailers noting rises from about 2.70 to 3.14 a pack. Shoppers and clerks varied in intent to quit, with some saying they will quit or drive to Virginia for cheaper packs while others planned to continue smoking. A few customers cited health concerns but price increases tempered by cartons versus single packs.
County health officers and a local psychologist say nicotine addiction often overrides price incentives. Katherine Shriver notes teens still experiment with cigarettes and other drugs, while Keith Foster says higher costs only offer a short term effect on smokers.
Jacqueline Obler 40 of 1 Surch St. Middletown died at R Adams Ey Shock Trauma Center after a motorcycle collision on Md. 17 near U.S. 340. She was a passenger on a 1977 Harley Davidson when the crash occurred at 1:09 p.m. A 1992 Honda Prelude driven by Linda Lewis 55 Knoxville turned onto the westbound ramp from Md. 17, blocking Obler’s path.
Traffic was heavy Sunday across Maryland interstates and major highways. Police reports say speeds dipped to about 45 mph as Thanksgiving crowds increased. Cpl Tim Miller notes congestion began around 3 p.m. with too many cars for the available lanes.
