The Violence Policy Center reports Maryland has the highest youth handgun death rate, 2.86 per 100000 for under 17, based on 1995 to 1999 data. Louisiana and Illinois follow. Most Maryland victims were Black, with many killed by acquaintances or family.

Family sues over birth malpractice in federal court

A Pennsylvania family filed a federal case in Baltimore against Dr. Gerrit Schipper for alleged negligence in Kayla Allen’s birth. The suit, by Kevin J. and Lisa Allen of Orrtanna, cites premature delivery at 27 weeks on Oct 3, 1992, transfer to University of Maryland, and failures in high risk assessment and care, with Johns Hopkins Hospital as a preferred facility. Mount Airy Woman Hurt In Car Wreck At High School Exit

A Mount Airy woman Brunia L Steed 40 was injured Wednesday leaving Luganore High School when she turned onto Old Annapolis Road and collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by Slaven Rinehart 39 of Frederick. Steed was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Rinehart escaped injury. Deputy Chris Ken Olander reported the 7 55 am crash as the investigation continued.

State delays Wilson Bridge bid deadline to next month

The bid deadline for the largest phase of the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge reconstruction is moved to next month after the Federal Highway Administration signs off on most of the $500 million superstructure contract but with the project labor agreement still unresolved. Maryland officials say the federal government has yet to approve the labor pact, delaying progress on the massive project.

Weather systems drive East rain and West mountain snow

A large rain and storm system swept the East and West. Rain and snow showers stretched from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes with hail damaging winds and possible tornadoes. Memphis evacuated four hundred residents after floods left water six feet deep. The West faced rain and mountain snow from the Pacific to the Rockies, with up to a foot of snow in high elevations and power outages and school closures reported after moisture dampened areas on both sides of the Cascades.

Cache of weapons found in basement of Baldwin home

Maine deputies seized 81 guns and more than 20 000 rounds of ammunition along with rockets and grenades from a basement during a restraining order service at a Baldwin home. William Bloomquist, 43, surrendered and faces three counts of aggravated assault tied to his wife. His lawyer denies all allegations.
