The Thurmont Historical Society unanimously rejected a $6,000 Maryland grant after learning its terms would require a perpetual historic easement and limit volunteer work. Despite fundraisers and $4,800 in cash plus $1,000 in materials, leaders say restoration could cost up to $75,000 and decide to pursue independent financing.
