NEA Sees Boost in Teachers Yet Shortage Persists
Washington reports the National Education Association estimates public schools will have 4.2 percent more teachers this year but still face a shortage of about 227 300 qualified instructors. The Advance Estimates place the 1953-38 supply at 1 246 424, up from 1 190 865 last year, with 7 319 not meeting full standards and three fifths of those lacking four years of college. The shortfall aims to replace inadequately prepared staff, retirements, overcrowding, and rising enrollment while adding services such as remedial work and math instruction. Over 33 million students are enrolled.
