Berlin radio claimed Allied troops pressed to within 15 miles of Tunis after clashes at Mateur northwest of the capital. Mejer El Bab and other Tunisian junctions were also mentioned with Axis forces resisting Allied advances.
The December term petit jury for Circuit Court was drawn in the court room with Chief Judge Ed ward S Delaplaine presiding. The non grand jury term begins December 14 and will focus on civil case trials with jurors from multiple towns and counties listed.
Reuters reports a Moscow broadcast claiming Benito Mussolini has personally taken command of Italian forces in Libya, replacing General Ettore Bastice who had been appointed supreme commander there in November 1941. The source attribution is unconfirmed and unverified.
London reports that about a fifth of the German air force, once battling the Russians, has been redeployed to confront the new threat in French North Africa. Sir Archibald Sinclair said that combined with the Italian air force, more than half of Germanys air strength is now active against Britain and in African waters.
United States heavy bombers struck Tripoli harbor and the Spanish mole as part of a major offensive with RAF raids on Tunis. The missions came ahead of the Eighth Army while battles around El Alamein saw limited land activity and no new reports from the front.
Harvard football coach Dick Harlow is sworn in as lieutenant-commander in the U S Navy and will head a naval health center at Pocono Manor Pennsylvania. He joins the naval reserve and will report to Washington December 1 for assignment. He previously served in World War I and is known for his work as curator of oology at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology.
The staff of the court clerk’s office will receive a four year term renewal. Clerk Ellis C. Wachter announced the reappointment of deputies Edward Mantz Arthur Lambert Albert Boileau and G Oscar Rhoads and clerks Martha Reynolds Jane Gaver. Two staff members John Derr and J Robert Fawards are in military service and will return after the war. Roy L Leatherman and Wachter have announced their own appointments for the new term. commissioners and Sheriff-elect Horace Alexander have not yet announced theirs for December 1.
Berlin broadcasts said Russian tank forces achieved a fairly deep penetration of German positions northeast of Moscow and that counter measures were under way. Soviet offensives around Stalingrad reported heavy fighting with 700 to 950 enemy killed or captured in recent clashes.
The French fleet disposition shows scuttled ships at Toulon Casablanca Oran and Dakar. Casablanca and Oran losses include battleship Jean Bart and destroyers while Dakar notes Richelieu damage plus cruisers and submarines. Fighting French forces at Martinique report the carrier Bearn and two cruisers.
Washington reports total Navy losses including the Marine Corps and Coast Guard 17252 officers and men as of November 15. The casualty list No 17 shows 747 dead wounded or missing for November 1 to 15, with 304 dead 252 wounded and 191 missing from that period.
Washington reports that farmers and war workers will be allowed gasoline to meet essential needs. Rubber Administrator William M. Jeffers told Senate investigators that immediate nationwide rationing is an absolute necessity. President Roosevelt ordered nationwide gas line rationing to begin December 1 to conserve rubber amid congressional protests.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden reportedly met yesterday with Georges Catroux of the Fighting French movement. Catroux, a De Gaulle ally and Levant commander, arrived from Beirut to brief the French national committee on Syria and Lebanon. It was unclear if Darlan’s status in North Africa was on the agenda.
National City Bank announces the 1,000th staff departure to the armed services. Frederick J F Somers Jr of Bellerose Long Island is named as the selected employee. Somers is 44 and married. The note mentions a wartime payment record.
Reports from Washington say a major cabinet reorganization could assign Harold L. Ickes to Labor to consolidate wartime manpower and procurement. An executive order may realign duties with McNutt moving to Interior and Perkins to Federal Security, creating a revitalized Labor Department.
The cabinet deprived Admiral Jean Darlan and General Henri Honore Giraud of French nationality at Laval’s first session with full powers from Marshall Petain. Laval then read Hitler’s letter announcing the German move into Toulon.
The Frederick County Salvage committee announced a scrap drive has funded an ambulance for the Motor Corps of the Frederick County chapter, American Red Cross. The presentation will occur Tuesday at 2 PM in front of Winchester Hall, weather permitting.
A three hour gun battle in Phoenix leaves two dead and at least 12 wounded as Negro soldiers clash with military and civilian police. Police Chief Don Steward recounts a fatal shot from each side. The riot prompted Army control of 28 blocks. casualties include Robert Riley 44 and Lt. August J. Essman 39 among the injured.
German forces occupied Toulon after French ships scuttled themselves to deny the Axis use of the Mediterranean fleet. Vichy and German reports cite Admiral De La Borde ordering self destruction as troops moved in to take control.
