Mount Airy Plans Fire Station Zoning Dispute Deepens

Mount Airy planners denied the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company's bid to amend the zoning ordinance to make a fire station a permitted use in a residential zone. The decision, 4 to 1, moves to the town council with about 30 residents in attendance, split between opposition and support. Fire officials argue central location aids response, while critics warn of precedent and increased activity. The planning staff noted some counties permit fire stations by right in residential zones, while others require special exceptions. The proposed site at Ridge and Park Avenues would cover 23 acres.
