Newton C. Dougherty a longtime Peoria educator and bank president pleaded guilty to five forgery charges tied to looting school funds. Judge Worthington sentenced him to concurrent terms of one to 14 years. Dougherty controlled school money, issued scrip and covered losses, with shortages near 94 500 to 100 000 between 1905 and 1905.
New York Nov 75 details from the Armstrong insurance committee reveal that profits from the United States Steel syndicate went to George W Perkins totaling 590310 with no reason recorded for the disbursement. Mileton M Madison testified that New York Life’s profits included 87187 and that a 590310 credit to Hamilton was cancelled as per statements with Perkins. George W Perkins defended the arrangements as proper and requested further testimony.
