Tax plan proposes higher rates on income and corporate gains
A Maryland tax revision plan would replace the present flat 3 percent income tax with a graduated 3 to 6 percent rate, keep all of the corporate income tax with 5 percent on the first 25 000 and 7 percent above, and set a beer tax at 18 cents per 100 valuation. Witnesses from teachers, labor, Baltimore City and state retailers endorsed it while CIO leader Charles A Della warned that the 6 cent beer tax could be passed to consumers as nickel bottle hikes.
