Delaware officials report 197 blind residents in the state, with 40 deemed liberte and showing no progress in the committee’s work. In two years, 136 pupils under observation, 20 are now reading by the embossed letter system.
A Vienna dispatch reports Serbians attempting to cross the Bosnian frontier near Soveralh were repulsed by Austrian troops. Serbians suffered seventeen killed while Austrians had three fatalities in the engagement near Parla.
Philadelphia reports local cattle sick with aphthous fever or hoof and mouth disease. Inspectors found four cattle shipped from Rat on county to a northern section farm. Two cows were sick among fifteen others. entire herd killed, milk confiscated, barns disinfected, place quarantined. Officials say human risk unlikely. seven children screened with mixed results. Dr Fox says cattle to human transmission via milk or butter unlikely.
In Tirin Italy on November 23 a close ally of the Duke of the Abruna says Dowager Queen Margherita leads strong opposition to his marriage to Miss Katherine Elkins. The queen and royal circle oppose the match, deeming it unlikely unless Miss Elkins changes course, while the duke guards details of the situation and may travel abroad with naval leave.
Report of a daytime collision in New York Bay as the steamers Admiral Dewey and Mount Desert struck amidships. Many passengers and crew aboard Mount Desert were rescued or transferred to the Dewey as the two ships drifted toward the east bank. Captain Davidson of the Dewey kept the vessels aligned to avert catastrophe and guided evacuees to safety. The Mount Desert later docked at South Brooklyn for passenger disembarkation.
