Private corporation to make medicinal liquor
Washington November 22 Immediate creation of a private corporation to manufacture medicinal whisky and to take over all existing cuppiles of ils liquor will be asked of Congress by Brie Gene Lincoln C Andrews Assistant Secretary of the Treasury to charge of prohibition enforcement He said today it was imperative that the cooperation immediately set about the detail ing of whisky lest the present supply of about 1500 000 gallons be exhausted at the end of five years which he estimated would be necessary for the new stock to time Critics the present system of private ownership and distribution of whisky General Andrews proposed that the corporation be under government supervision and that it buy 2 iqnor stock now on hand and assume full responsibility for future distribution of medicinal whisky Secretary Mellon who joined Pres went Covlidge in vetoing a previous proposal that the government take over the supplies of medicinal Hynor this endorsed the new plan While the law now authorizes the Internal Revenue Bureau to make provision for replenishment of the medicinal stock General Andrews asserted that no thoughtful citizen would want to place upon a government official the embarrassing responsibility of deciding what distilleries shall be authorized to manufacture 3 000 000 gallons of whisky or to require him to undertake to supervise the manufacture The one best practical solution to remedy all these conditions seems to be that Congress enactment set up a private corporation which will be in fact a beneficent monopoly in that it will purchase and own all the medicinal spirits in the country and be the sole source of supply from now on for medicinal spirits
