An unofficial source says a temporary OPA order will be issued early next week in Frederick city to raise retail milk prices. A floor of about 1.5 to 2 cents per quart is expected, lifting the city rate to roughly 13 to 14 cents per quart and about a cent per pint. The hike aims to stabilize a shaky market as producers seek higher prices and some shipments move to other markets.
Washington FCC orders American Telephone and Telegraph to show cause why its long distance rates and other charges should not be reduced. The agency notes earnings on net book investment at 24.37 percent before taxes and 14.92 percent after federal taxes, with a Dec 1 response deadline and Dec 16 hearing. The probe will cover rates charges classifications practices and regulations of the long lines department.
Brig. Gen. Patrick Timberlake, chief of the U S Army Air Force bomber command in the Middle East, narrowly escaped an Axis attack on a long bombing mission. His four passenger plane sustained over 70 bullet and shell holes, part of the rudder was destroyed, an engine failed then restarted, and two crewmen were wounded while Timberlake remained unhurt.
The Office of Price Administration postponed the idle tire turn-in deadline to December 1 aligning with nationwide gasoline rationing. Motorists may dispose of tires beyond the five per passenger car limit, extending nine days from the prior November 22 deadline. After December 1, owning too many tires will bar gasoline use for passenger cars.
Local Frederick wood dealers report severe shortages with three of four having no wood or fireplace size stock. Demand soars as fuel oil rationing prompts a shift to wood. Prices rise and delivery remains unreliable due to labor, transportation, and farm labor constraints. Chunk wood sells for 1 dollar per six sacks, $8 a load, with total stocking depleted and little outlook for immediate improvement.
Fenton Rinker, 73, of near New Market, was found along Route 40 five miles east of the city in a semiconscious state. He suffered a base skull fracture and a comminuted right shoulder fracture, was moved to Frederick City Hospital in serious condition, and authorities said he could not yet provide information about the accident. He appeared to have been walking east facing traffic when struck, and may have been on the road for about an hour before discovery.
British submarines reportedly sank an Axis destroyer and an Axis tanker in the Mediterranean, with a second destroyer and another supply ship possibly sunk. The tanker went down in the Aegean and the damaged supply ship was part of a three-ship convoy hit in the same area. the destroyers were damaged off the Sicilian coast.
Residents mistook brush burning for a barn fire near Adams town causing a false alarm. The Independents rushed to the Clarence Thomas farm tenanted by Charles Wisner around 6:55 pm, only to find a brush blaze near the barn. Neighbors had concluded a barn fire in the semi dark. A second note reports Hungary and Romania reaching an understanding on prisoner exchange, with 21 Hungarian political prisoners to be surrendered at the border.
Frederick High School boys will help the 40 and 8 scrap drive Sunday afternoon from 1 to 6. The first collection was last Sunday and the drive ends November 29. Residents should place scrap along the curb for truck pickup, with door to door canvassing in some sections. About 16 youths from a new high school organization will assist, and proceeds support child welfare via the Frederick county Salvage committee.
The War Price and Rationing Board announced a one week halt to retail coffee sales starting at midnight to stock up for a new rationing program. Institutions must register Tuesday and Wednesday at the Freder ick main office or local receiving stations in Brunswick and Emmitsburg with base period use, inventory, and supplier details.
The American Women's Volunteer Services will open free coffee and doughnuts at designated cooperative stations in Frederick to aid Army and Navy men and remove the hitchhiking obstacle. Stations will be marked with signs. the canteen at 147 West Patrick Street will host the project. A new AWVS board was announced with President Mrs Joseph H. Jacques Doriot a leading French pro Nazi was attacked by a crowd armed with bludgeons as he left a meeting of his National Popular party. He and his bodyguard were taken to hospital severely injured with broken ribs and possible loss of sight in his left eye.
London reports the Turin attack as the heaviest raid on Italy so far with Stirling aircraft risking losses and returning from a 1500 mile round trip. British sources say the raids are an economical method to damage Axis industrial bases, while Italian officials claim heavy fires and casualties. News also notes Italian public reactions to bombed Genoa and Milan and a dismissal of Genoa’s governor after protests.
Capetown Nov 21 General J B M Hertzog aged 75 renowned as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa at the start of World War II died today. He led the country through the outbreak period before Parliament defeated his neutrality effort and he resigned. Smuts succeeded him as Prime Minister.
Allied armored units massed in North Africa closed on Tunisia as Axis defenses formed a semicircular barrier around Bizerte and Tunis. Reports say British and Fighting French troops seized prisoners, paratroops destroyed armored cars, and German claims noted tank and armored car losses east of Tabarka. British and American forces pressure toward Tunis while air and sea control emerge as key factors in the campaign.
