Mass deaths linked to Guyana sect after Ryan ambush
Georgetown reports 300 to 400 bodies found at the Jonestown camp believed to have died by poison brewed in a tub. U.S. Congressman Leo J. Ryan was among five Americans killed during the Sunday ambush as he sought to escort disenchanted sect members from the camp. Information minister Shirley Field-Ridley noted many others fled into the jungle and that one suspect, Larry Layton, was in custody. The mass deaths raise questions about planned self-inflicted deaths by sect adherents amid investigations of abuse at the community.
