The Board of Education approved an additional 225000 for the upcoming year as part of a roughly 5200000 budget, mainly to boost teachers salaries and hire more staff. The plan awaits final approval by the County Commissioners with a public hearing date not yet set, possibly December 7 or 8.
About 300 women attended the annual Thank Offering service at All Saints Episcopal Church Baltimore, presenting over 10555 for missionary work. Bishops Nordie C. Pittsburgh AP The basic steel industry disclosed it had submitted a new contract proposal to the United Steelworkers Union, which promptly rejected it. The union said the latest offer, made Nov. 15, shows little change from the Oct. 17 proposal and valued at about 24 cents per hour over three years, with Union actuaries calling the pension improvement worth under one-third of a cent. Cooper, chief industry negotiator, said cost estimates reflect about 30 cents an hour over the period, and the industry argues the offer is fair within non-inflationary bounds. The union says the change is minor and would threaten hard-won gains, accusing management of seeking to eliminate jobs and benefits via arbitration and work-rule changes. Negotiations followed mills reopening under a Taft-Hartley injunction after a six-day strike.
Jefferson resident Preston Moore Jr was found guilty of non support by Magistrate Edward D Storm in the magistrate court. He received a sentence of 30 or 50 days, with a fine payable to Estelle Moore and jail time at a dollar a day if unpaid.
Eugene Lande a Fort Detrick soldier crashed a 1849 Chevrolet into a telephone pole after failing to negotiate a turn at Rosemont avenue and Shookstown road. He was charged with reckless driving. Officer Charles K. Cashour investigated.
