Frederick County faces a housing shortage with 30 percent of households needing assistance. The Planning Commission report cites substandard homes, rising rents, and incomes too low for decent housing. Elderly, widowed, and working families are affected across districts, with Frederick City showing no clear concentration.
Nine of thirteen defendants in an Emmitsburg drug raid case pleaded guilty in circuit court after their lawyers met with prosecutors. Six admitted possession of marijuana and three admitted maintaining a common nuisance. Four charges were dropped. Sentencing for the nine was deferred pending a pre-sentencing report. defendants released on $500 personal bond.
State's attorney criticized laboratory analysis of suspected narcotics after a Sept. 17 raid. He said sloppy reports and conflicting statements helped prompt the decision not to press LSD and cocaine charges. Lab issues include chemists' availability and Maryland's fragmented testing network.
Dense fog blanketed the area this morning slowing traffic on most roads. The weatherman forecast clearing by noon and sunny skies with highs in the 60s and light southerly winds. Overnight lows were expected in the 40s with clouds moving in and showers possible Friday. The previous night reached freezing, and Wednesday topped out at 60 under mostly sunny skies.
Winter road work may occur on Loy Wolfe Road near Wolfsville as the Frederick County Roads Department reviews paving options after residents complain of poor conditions. A Buckeystown man, Roy Steven Hodge, 23, is charged with homicide in the death of James Edward Howard, 67, found Oct. 23 with a gunshot wound near Lily Ponds Road. Hodge was arrested at his home and held without bond. A sawed-off shotgun believed to be the murder weapon was recovered. Howard hunted alone. a dead squirrel was found in his vest. A reward totaling 250 dollars funds investigation led by local clubs and officials.
The Senate voted 49 to 46 to defeat a Republican bid to block a Democratic plan for presidential campaign funds, with Democrats backing the measure and Republicans offering future amendments. The outcome signals Democrats may push the plan into the $26 billion tax cut bill, while a separate attempt to boost Social Security was also rejected.
Maryland public schools will pay teachers on Nov 14 under the 1971 72 pay schedule with no retroactive pay at this time. The issue of retroactive pay remains before the federal Pay Board. Frederick County teachers start on Nov 14, others on Nov 24.
Prices edged higher in a slow trading session on Wall Street as investors absorbed scant news. Traders noted limited volume and a cautious mood while several key indices rose modestly.
