Newsprint supply tight as industry expands output
The ANPA notes stock on hand averaged 27 days at end of October, the lowest since June 1953, while demand rose with a record 4,163,928 tons used in the first ten months of 1954, up 1 percent from 1953. October usage also set records, and prices may rise 3 to 5 dollars per ton as print capacity grows 20 percent but most new production won’t be ready for 2 to 3 years. Canadian mills account for about 80 percent of U.S. newsprint, with producers operating at reduced capacity yet unable to meet demand. A long range fuels policy is being drafted by the Army to cut fuel use in vehicles and engines.
