The Voice of the Press on Cost of Living
From the New York World a long investigation by US Labor Commissioner Garrett D Wright shows that thirteeen years ago 1896 had the lowest cost of living and 1902 the highest with average family needs 161 percent higher and 10.9 percent above the period average. Of 25 food groups prices fluctuated 16.4 percent retail and 87.3 percent wholesale. The 2 567 families studied had average income 527 19 and expenditure 768 51 with 326 for food, 5.31 persons per family, costing 61 69 per member per year and 145 per year for all expenses. The apparent $60 saving a year reflects thrift and is greatest in the West and least in the South. Wright notes higher prices reduce real prosperity unless earnings rise.
