Budget stalemate forces NIST to close
GAITHERSBURG The federal shutdown reached Gaithersburg on Thursday forcing the National Institute of Standards and Technology to close at 5 p.m. Spokesman Michael Newman said money on hand could not keep NIST open and the executive board decided it was not in the agency’s best interest to stay open. A skeleton crew will run essential offices and a few researchers may finish ongoing projects, but most of NIST’s about 2,700 employees will not report to work until the budget impasse ends.
