Paris reports the court of cassation has ordered notifying Captain Dreyfus on Devil's Island to prepare his defense. Mme Dreyfus is overjoyed. Former War Minister Cavaignac and Deroulede urged Dupuy not to obey. Dupuy refused. The court plans to seek the secret dossier and related ministerial depositions if produced.
Chicago Virden Coal company ends strike by agreeing to union wage scale of 40 cents for hand labor and 30 cents for machine work. Agreement reached after protracted talks at President Loucks office with Illinois Mine Workers and union officials. No decision on striker replacements. viewed as a major miners victory.
In Pekin on November 16 Li Hung Chang asked to be spared from meeting the Shang Tung provincial viceroy to discuss measures to prevent further flooding of the Fellow river pleading age and infirmity The dowager empress thanked him for his service and urged him to proceed to the Yellow river without delay. A late war note reports Count Stolburg-Wernigerode cashiered and sentenced to forty months in prison for fatally stabbing Sergeant Schienhardt of the Fifteenth Uhlans near Hagenau during a bivouac. The incident followed a dispute over abusive language after a reprimand during a cooking mishap. Schienhardt died in hospital the next day. The sergeant, son of a laborer, had two brothers in the army. The Count formerly belonged to the Twelfth Tuyaars and left after an assault on his orderly.
The annual pension of the Grand Encampment of New Jersey Odd Fellows was held in Trenton yesterday. Elected officers include Grand patriarch Joseph W. Walling of Keyport grand high priest Andrew Didrick of Hackensack grand senior warden Anthony Moore of Jersey City grand junior warden Harry A. Phillips of Newark grand scribe Lewis Parker of Trenton and grand treasurer James C. Robbins.

A Grand Trunk express bound for Toronto crashed into a moving freight near Murray Bay crossing two miles west of Trenton Ontario on November 16. Twelve killed and many injured as the westbound train diverted to the single track. The wreck severely damaged the second class car and baggage car while passengers in the coach and sleepers suffered varying injuries. Names of the dead and injured include engineers and firemen from Belleville and Toronto. The Russian passengers traveling to Cincinnati are among the unidentified victims.
In Cuba near Santiago de Cuba on November 16 a disturbance by colored regiments ended with Lieutenant Ferera killed and several others wounded. The incident began when Ferera attempted to arrest two soldiers for abusing a Cuban workman. The colored troops, especially the Ninth immunes, were implicated as the fighting spread. General Wood offered a $1,000 reward for shooter names and warned colored officers about their men’s conduct.
