Senate may reopen probe of Electric Boat security

In Groton the Senate Armed Services seapower subcommittee may resume hearings on shipyard security after seven protesters were arrested for breaking into Electric Boat and damaging the Trident Georgia. The arrests followed a prior July 5 incident that saw nine protesters sentenced and some trespassers reach a Trident submarine USS Florida. The Atlantic Life Community claimed responsibility, saying entry was easy and intruders spent about 30 minutes near a submarine. Electric Boat declined comment while promising improved security measures. Senator Cohen indicated another congressional review is likely if repetition occurs.

Fires destroy two structures in Maryland towns

Two fires over the weekend destroyed a vacant New Market house owned by Michael Sponselier and a Woodsboro barn once housing farm equipment. No injuries were reported, and investigators led by Jerry L. Chipley are pursuing causes. Wind and rain hindered firefighting, but nearby buildings were spared. The Woodsboro barn belonged to Clinton W. Smith II and was spotted by the farmer’s son.
