Tuberculin Christmas Seal Origins at Wilmington Shack
In October 1907, Emily P. Bissell and Wilmington physicians raise funds for an open air tuberculosis shack on land leased from Alfred L. du Pont. Bissell, a Red Cross worker, devises the Christmas Seal campaign inspired by Jacob Riis and a Danish stamp idea to save patients and curb the disease. The initiative grows into a nationwide fundraising tradition with local newspaper promotion and community support from Frederick County and beyond.
