An American journalist’s vivid life study portrays Paris rag-pickers or chiffonniers, about 600 in number, mostly women and children, who work nightly gathering discarded items to sell. They live in damp cellars in Quartier Moustard, endure squalid lodgings, and labor up to twelve hours for roughly thirty cents a day.
